The play is set about 4000AD the robots Eua and Twent were
made between 3000AD and 3500AD. They’re not entirely sure as some of their
memories have been wiped, but they can remember back at least 500 years. For the
first couple of hundred years they remember they were slaves to humans, but the
humans died out largely, although it is rumored that some of them still exist in
remote regions of the galaxy. Both of the robots are cylindrical and bipodic. At
the time they were built computer technology had reached its peak. They were
both used as space pilots to fly cargo vessels from remote locations to earth.
As the humans died out the robots formed their own society, a democratic society
with no war. As time progressed each robot developed its own personality Eua has
an ordinary male voice and decided to develop in terms of emotions and he has
gone some way to developing feelings. Twent has studied twentieth century
history, Twent has decided on a female voice although she has adopted a somewhat
macho attitude and in the course of the play this becomes exaggerated and she
starts to think she’s a cowboy, possible slight overtones of a lesbian robot.
Twent’s voice does pitch change both up and also to almost Dalek robotic
sound. As most of the action is set in a vacuum background sounds should be
impossible, however, in science fiction it has become customary to have sound
effects. Where I have said (noise) I am referring to radio noise ie a waterfall
sound, technically called white noise. I see Twents voice being processed
through something that used to be
called a vocoder. Background noises throughout could be of wind noises. As all
comunication is by radio we could have crackles and whistles. The world they
come from is called Cyrus Minor it’s the nearest star to our solar system.
Twent is mostly interested in facts although she does have a tendency to
free associate. Twent sometimes sings using her own voice and sometimes this
goes into her playing back the original sound from her memory.
